Our Mission is to empower, uplift, and encourage young people of color by providing items that help address underrepresentation, uncover black history, and spark inspiration.

Our Story

Considering people of color are still oftentimes misrepresented in mainstream media from tv and radio to books and magazines, it is easy for kids and teens to fall victim to those views.

Black Butterfly Beautiful, is a subscription box created to empower, uplift, and encourage young people of color (ages 5 to 19) to embrace who they are. These boxes are sent monthly and curated based on subscriber age, gender and the month‚Äôs theme featuring a book, at least one product from a black-owned business and other items to help address underrepresentation, uncover black history, and provide inspiration.

Our Creator

Journi D'Khaos Prewitt is a Memphis-based teen entrepreneur working to empower black youth by helping them realize their potential. At the age of 16, she noticed the lack of interest many black kids and teens have in reading, the overwhelming under-representation of African-Americans, and the self-esteem issues rooted in not realizing their value and rich history, so she set out to develop a solution to these problems with Black Butterfly Beautiful.

Our Beliefs

The image of the butterfly has come to define the many expressions of the feminine black consciousness and for a good reason. The butterfly is the perfect articulation of the exquisite beauty of nature. Whether tiny or large, brightly colored or more subdued, the butterfly‚Äôs allure is undeniable. Each one displays its unique patterns and hues, and no one species outshines any other.

Similarly, there is no one ideal image of a black girl-- each is gorgeous in her right. All African-Americans share a glorious history of struggle and perseverance that has funneled into the modern black renaissance. And, like the graceful butterfly, the awakened black woman exemplifies the dazzling beauty of that cultural evolution.
